Infertility is a major problem encountered in clinical practice. Infertility can be defined as a factor that involves non-production of sperms or other reasons in which either male or female reproductive abnormalities are involved. Infertility is also called as a condition of a woman who is unable to carry out pregnancy or to get pregnant.
Infertility Meaning: A woman who is unable to get pregnant or conceive even after unprotected sex can be said to be in a state of infertility. Infertility is also called as sub fertility for a more benign condition. It can be either in a man or woman and not essential that both the partners are infertile.
Infertility and Ayurveda: Ayurveda has defined that potent fertility for both the sex is the final result of the perfect food digestion. Digestion is an essential aspect, as it nourishes the whole of the body. According to Ayurveda, digestive system that is not perfect is a sign of dosha imbalance and it arises from accumulated toxins, stress, and immune system imbalances and poor nutrition. Celiac syndrome is also a major cause of infertility, as it results in the lack of proper absorption and assimilation of nutrients from the food one eats.
Cause of Infertility
Sub fertility – Sub fertility arises when a couple has tried unsuccessfully to have a child for a year or more. It means the couple is less fertile than a typical or a normal couple. Fecundability rate is found to be approx 3%-5%. Endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome are the main causes of subfertility.
Primary and Secondary Infertility – Primary infertility can be defined when a couple is unable to conceive and secondary infertility is the difficulty to conceive after already been conceived previously or having a miscarriage.
Combined Infertility – Combined infertility occurs in which both male and female may be infertile or sub fertile. In some cases, the cause is due to the genetic or immunological defect.
Infertility and Complications – Infertility treatment in some cases cause complications that include side effects from medications, multiple pregnancy and stress.
Side effects of medications – Some medications can cause extreme side effects that can cause infertility. These side effects include:
Ovarian Hyper stimulation Syndrome – Infertility due to ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome can occur by the medicines that stimulate ovaries. Ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome causes the ovaries to produce too many follicles and swelling of the ovaries. Mild symptoms of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating abdomen and diarrhea.
Ectopic Pregnancy – “Ectopic” denotes wrong place. Fertilization takes place in the womb and ectopic pregnancy occurs when fertilized egg is implanted outside the womb. About 95% of ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tube.
Pelvic Infection – Multiple abortions that result in the extraction of an egg from an ovary. It results in developing a painful infection in pelvis. There is likelihood of less serious infection than for every 500 procedures performed.
Multiple Pregnancy – Multiple pregnancies can result in case of extreme infertility. Possible complications that can result in multiple pregnancies include:
Babies that are born premature
Diabetes during pregnancy
Cerebral palsy in a baby
Stress – Stress and strain relation can cause infertility. Stress can lead to decreased attention to plan a child.
AYURVEDA AND INFERTILITY
Ayurveda defines infertility as “an inability to achieve conception by a couple despite having normal intimation for at least one year. It is caused due to any defect in either egg or sperm. It is also caused by the defect in the male or female reproductive organ. According to Ayurvedic physiology, when there is any defect or problems in reproductive organs, then it shows that shukra or artava dhatu is affected. Shukra and artava dhatus are the male and female reproductive tissues. Due to affected and defective shukra and artava, ojas become low and it can be detected by advanced ayurvedic practitioners.
Cause of Infertility according to Ayurveda
Any injury to the genital organ
Mental and emotional disturbance
Consumption of too much salt, pepper, hot food that increase pitta and destroys shukra
Controlling the urge for longer duration that can lead to Veeryaavarodha
Overindulgence and too much of sexual activity that can lead to shukra kshaya.
Damage of reproductive tissue that can lead to infertility
Genetic causes of infertility
Inability of nutritive substance to reach the reproductive tissue
Multiple ovary scrapes due to multiple abortions.

Ayurveda believes that sperm quality is an important factor and if semen (shukra) gets mixed with dhatus or mala (wastes of the body), then the quality of the sperm is altered and it fails to cause the production of offspring.

Diet and Lifestyle
• Almonds are good source of nutrition. Eat soaked almonds everyday in the morning.
• Caffeine should be avoided or should be taken in limited amount.
• Avoid high fatty food.
• Sweet fruits as mangoes, peaches and plums are recommended for good health.
• More of dairy products should be consumed. Milk, lassi and paneer should be taken every day in the diet.
• Too much smoking and alcohol should be avoided.
• Overweight and Underweight can cause women impairment of reproductive organ.
• Urad daal cooked with turmeric should be taken in the diet.
• Avoid food having high preservatives.
Prevention of Infertility
(I) Change in lifestyle
a. Weight – Women who are underweight or overweight suffer from irregular release of eggs and sometimes complete absence of eggs.
b. Proper Diet – Nutrition and a balanced diet is necessary to prevent infertility. Fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, whole meat, bread, fish, pasta and pulses.
c. Stress avoidance – Stress can affect fertility both in male and the female.
(II) Medications and Drugs
Medications that affect fertility should be avoided. Illegal drugs as marijuana or cocaine can affect fertility.
(III) Health checkup and tests
Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (SIT). There are certain symptoms that persist in people having Chlamydia.
In men, pain during urination, discharge from the tip of the male reproductive gland, pain in the testicle.
In women pain in the lower abdomen, and heavy bleeding between two successive periods
Some home remedies
Home remedies can also cure infertility. Intake of shatavari, kaunch, and Ashwagandha are highly recommended to improve the quality and quantity of reproductive fluid.
