Kamadhenu – Wish Fulfilling Cow

Kamadhenu cow (Sanskrit: Kāmadhenu), Kamadugha, Kamaduh also known as Surabhi (Surabhī), is a divine heavenly goddess mentioned in Hindu mythology as the mother of all cows. Kamadhenu cow is also depicted in the ancient Vedas as the cow of “wish” or “desire”. When Brahma himself concluded Surabhi cows austerities he appeared before them and granted their wishes and blessed them with the benediction that cows would eternally be the sustainers of all creature creatures.Kamadhenu cow is supposed to fulfill all desires, so it is depicted as cow of an innumerable fulfilment of wishes.
Kamadhenu cow bestows the owner whatever he desires and is often portrayed as the mother of other cattle as well as the 11 Rudras. Kamadhenu’s motherhood and nourishing attributes can be solely illustrated by her twin breasts. In symbolic shades, Kamadhenu is generally illustrated as a white cow with a female head and breasts. Kamadhenu cow is white as a pure light of divine soul. Every part of the cow’s body has its own religious significance. Its four legs symbolizes the four Vedas and its teats the four purusharthas (dharma, artha, kama, moksha). Kamadhenu’s horn symbolizes God’s, its face symbolizes the sun and moon, shoulder depicts Agni (God of fire) and legs the great Himalayas. Kamadhenu cow is also widely remembered with her five other forms that are Nanda, Sunanda, Surabhi, Susheela, and Sumana. The Puranas defined, “Kamadhenu is a goddess with marvellous and immense power who gives milk whenever needed by Gods and sages” and that “all the cattle in the world today have descended from Kamadhenu.” This divine cow, which lives in Swarga Loka (heaven), emerged at the time of Samudra-Manthan (the great churning of the ocean by the Gods (suras) and demons (asuras) belongs to sage Vashishta. The spiritual and divine importance of the cow can be readily observed in the use of milk, butter, and ghee in Vedic ritual ceremonies.
Lord Krishna says in Srimad Bhagavatam, “I can be worshiped within the Cows by offerings of grass and other suitable grains and paraphernalia for the pleasure and health of the Cows, and one may worship Me within the Vaishnavas by offering loving friendship to them and honoring them in all respects.”

Cow can be depicted as a universal mother signifying krittika constellation. Her innumerable resourcefulness is knotted with the constellation Rohini, whose symbol, ‘an oxen cart pulling a fresh harvest’ shows the fertility aspect of both the earth and the cow. The cow’s nourishing feature is denoted with the constellation Pushya, which has a cow’s ‘milk-giving udder,’ a symbol, and signifies constellation that relates motherhood and the nature actually signifies with the cow Kamadhenu. Kamadhenu, also known as Gayatri, is worshipped as the heavenly cow. It is believed that the Gods drink its milk that fills them with self-satisfaction, happiness and abundance.

Ignorance makes him helpless to understand the basic purpose of life. A man is completely unable to enjoy physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual infirmities. Love, devotion, company of noble and righteous person and spiritual bliss can hardly be enjoyed by a person who is spiritually bankrupt. Nature depicts the survival of the fittest and person who is deprived of ignorance gets his inner self and soul filled with his life purpose. The separation from the soul is the original sin.
