It is Lord Krishna’s birth that is celebrated during Janmashtami. It is a reminder of one of the most important principles of Sanatan Dharma, which is my darkness increases the light of consciousness eventually appears.
Lord Krishna was born at midnight in a prison under circumstances that appeared almost impossible. However, he was born to end adharma and cruelty in the world.
Krishna Janmashtami 2026 Date
Krishna Janmashtami will be observed on 4th September 2026.
This Muhurat will change as per the locational Panchang. Dahi Handi will then be celebrated on 5th September, a day after Janmashtami.
What makes Krishna Janmashtami astrologically significant?
Krishna’s qualities are:
- Wisdom
- Diplomacy
- Intelligence
- Emotional Balance
- Relationship
- Dharma
Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagwat Gita emphasise the importance of performing one’s duties with awareness rather than being consumed by the outcome. Astrologically, this is an important lesson. Astrology approaches the birth chart thoughtfully, and then that becomes a tool of understanding one’s tendencies, strengths and challenges. As astrologers prescribe remedies after understanding the birth chart, like Krishna’s approach that knowing how to respond to situations is even more important.

Rohini Nakshatra and Lord Krishna
Krishna Janmashtami and Rohini Nakshatra also has a deep relationship. Krishna was born in Rohini Nakshatra.
Rohini is associated with growth and beauty. The moon is associated with love and creativity. Therefore, the birth of Lord Krishna during this time signifies opposite qualities.
Krishna also had a beautiful balance between opposite personalities. He loved people with detachment. He experienced pleasure, but with awareness. He worked for growth, but without any material success defining it.
Krishna Janmashtami Puja Rituals
The following rituals should be done to celebrate Janmashtami. This has been mentioned by Mr. Prashant Kapoor.
- Before the Pooja, clean the area, where you will keep the Krishna idol. This active cleaning also leads to removing the mental clutter
- A small Bal Gopal idol can be placed on a clean platform. Many families decorate this space with flowers, peacock feathers, and small Krishna elements.
- Tulsi is considered sacred. Offer Tulsi leaves if available.
- Offer Makhan Mishri due to Krishna’s childhood Association with butter.
- Chant Krishna’s name.
- At midnight, celebrate Krishna’s birth with with bells and conch.
Why do we celebrate Dahi Handi?
The day after Janmashtami is celebrated as Dahi Handi. Dahi Handi is also associated with Krishna. His friends and Krishna would form human pyramids to have the butter and curd placed high above the ground. Taking an inspiration from this, the festival of Dahi Handi came into effect.
In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi has become a significant public celebration. Govind groups form human pyramids to break the handi having curd, butter, or other offerings. This handi is placed high above the ground.
Even though this is to celebrate Krishna‘s childhood stories, there is a deeper symbolic interpretation. The Handi stands for the goal. The human pyramid stands for collective effort. The breaking of the handi stands for overcoming obstacles.
And the lesson that we receive from this is no single person can reach the Top alone. Everyone has a role to play to make someone reach the Top.
Dahi Handi and Astrology
The Sun
The sun stands for authority, confidence, and leadership. The person at the top of the pyramid needs confidence and courage. But leadership is only possible when others support the structure.
The Moon
The moon stands for mind and emotions. A human pyramid requires people to trust each other and remain emotionally coordinated. A person panicking can affect everybody in the human pyramid.
Mars
Mars stands for courage and physical strength. Dahi Handi demands physical effort, determination, and fearlessness.
Jupiter
Jupiter stands for knowledge and wisdom. The strategy needed to successfully complete the Dahi Hindi is not physical. It requires planning and guidance.
Saturn
The foundation members need tremendous discipline. They may not receive the attention of the person breaking the Handi, but without them, the pyramid cannot exist. This is an excellent reminder of Saturn’s principal, that work done quietly often creates the strongest results.

The real lesson of Krishna Janmashtami
The real lesson of Krishna Janmashtami can be understood through Krishna’s life. Krishna teaches Arjun to act, not because success is guaranteed or because the future is certain. Avoiding action due to fear of the uncertain is the one that we need to overcome.
In Modern life too, this is a very apt explanation. We constantly worry about the next step in our personal and professional life and waste our time rather than doing the action now.
We should all learn from Krishna and do the action now. Do not focus on what is going to happen tomorrow.
Mr. Prashant Kapoor believes that all of us should follow this principle from this Janmashtami.
