Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is regarded as one of the most spiritually significant days in the Hindu calendar. In 2025, it will be observed on Wednesday, April 30 and the shubh muhurat (auspicious time) to buy gold is from 5:43 AM to 12:20 PM.
Celebrated during the third waxing lunar day of Vaisakha, Akshaya stands for abundance that continues without end. Engaging in acts of generosity, devotion, and wise decisions on this day can yield enduring benefits and manifestations.
It is the day associated with the birth of Lord Parshuram, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. It is also remembered for the story of Sudama, who offered Krishna a handful of beaten rice and was blessed with great abundance. In the Mahabharata, the Pandavas are said to have received the Akshaya Patra on this day, a vessel that provided endless food, symbolising divine grace and unshakable faith.
If you wish to align with the meaning of this sacred occasion, here are three practices that can help bring balance, abundance, and clarity into your life.
- Perform Surya Arghya by Presenting Water and Grains to the Morning Sun
The Sun is seen as a symbol of energy, light, and renewal. Offering water mixed with sacred ingredients at sunrise is considered a meaningful way to start the day.
How to do it:
- Fill a copper pot with clean water
- Add a pinch of red sandalwood, fresh red flowers, uncooked rice, and a small amount of jaggery or sugar
- Face the east and pour the water slowly while chanting “Om Suryaya Namah” or reciting the Surya Gayatri mantra
This practice is a way to express gratitude to the natural forces that support life. Water is believed to cleanse the path ahead, while grains represent nourishment. Together, they form a simple yet powerful offering.
- Donate Yellow Items or Gold to the Needy
Giving on this day is thought to create positive returns that are both material and spiritual. The focus is on giving with a clear and honest heart.
What to donate:
- Yellow foods such as turmeric, lentils, bananas, or mangoes
- Gold or silver coins, even small or symbolic ones
- Clothing in white or yellow
Who to offer to:
- Women, children, or temple priests
- Religious institutions or individuals in need
Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is traditionally represented through the purity and value of gold. But the significance lies not in what is given, but in the thought behind it. A sincere offering, however simple, carries meaning beyond its material worth.
- Plant a Tree or Feed a Cow
Acts that support nature and living beings are considered especially meaningful on Akshaya Tritiya. Planting a tree or feeding a cow is seen as an offering that benefits the world around you.
How to do it:
- Choose sacred or native trees like peepal, banyan, neem, or tulsi and plant them near your home or in your community
- Feed a desi cow with items like wheat flour, bananas, jaggery, or clean water
These gestures reflect care and respect for life. Trees are seen as guardians of the environment, and cows hold a special place in Indian culture as symbols of nurturing and balance. Offering food or water to a cow is a way of giving back to the five elements of nature.
A Day to Anchor Your Intentions
It’s not the gold or the ritual that defines Akshay Tritiya, but your ability to act with clarity and connect to your inner purpose. Whether you make a quiet offering, give to someone in need, or begin the day with prayer, the thought behind your actions is what carries forward. Let that intention guide you.
