Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most sacred and spiritually intense of all 24 Ekadashis observed in the Indian calendar. This year, Nirjala Ekadashi falls on 6th June, during the peak summer month of Jyeshtha (May-June).
Falling during the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Jyeshtha, this Ekadashi is unique because it involves absolute fasting without or water for 24 hours.
It is said that observing just this one Ekadashi, even if one misses all others, grants the benefits of observing all 24 Ekadashis of the year, bringing immense spiritual merit, forgiveness of sins, and blessings of good health, long life, and liberation (moksha).
Astrological and Spiritual Significance
Nirjala Ekadashi carries immense astrological weight. Observing this fast helps to pacify malefic planetary influences, especially those linked to Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn. It balances emotional turbulence, releases karmic blocks, and enhances intuitive clarity.
Even if you cannot do a full fast due to health reasons, avoid grains and processed food. Keep the day light, sacred, and slow. The more you refrain, the more you receive.
Rituals, Observance and How to Honour It
When you’re observing Nirjala Ekadashi for the first time or simply looking to deepen your connection to it, here’s a spiritual guide to the rituals and flow of the day.
Pre-dawn (Brahma Muhurta) – Cleansing & Sankalp
- Wake up early, ideally before sunrise.
- Take a cleaning bath (snan) using holy water or fresh water infused with tulsi leaves or sandalwood.
- Face the east and make a sankalp (mental resolve) to observe the fast sincerely, for spiritual growth, good health, and inner clarity.
Morning to Sunset – Worship & Reflection
- Set up a clean prayer space, with an idol or photo of Lord Vishnu, the deity associated with Ekadashis.
- Offer tulsi leaves, fruits, and yellow flowers to the deity.
- Chant Vishnu Sahasranama (1000 names of Vishnu), or the Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya mantra.
- Refrain from consuming food, water, or even fruits. Avoid chewing gum or rinsing the mouth excessively.
- Maintain mental silence – reduce speaking, avoid screens, and spend time reading spiritual texts like the Bhagavad Gita or listening to bhajans.
Sunset to Sunrise (Next Day) – Silence & Surrender
- As night falls, continue the fast with stillness. Avoid excessive movement or mental strain.
- You may sleep early or stay up in quiet prayer or meditation if health permits.
- Some observe Jagran (night-long vigil), while others sleep mindfully, ending the day in surrender.
Breaking the Fast (Parana) – The Next Morning
- On 7th June 2025, after sunrise and morning rituals, break the fast by first offering food and water to a cow, Brahmin, or a needy person.
- Break your own fast with water infused with tulsi, followed by fresh fruits or light sattvic food.
Key Tips
- Those who cannot keep a waterless fast due to health reasons can also opt for a partial fast with fruits or coconut water but should still avoid grains and beans.
- Focus not only on what you refrain from, but what you absorb: silence, surrender, intention, and service.
This Ekadashi Nirjala, let your devotion be surrender, your practice strong, and your intention clear. Spend the day in silence. With less. With yourself. Without digital distractions, mindless habits, or overconsumption. Give up excess. Not just of food, but of thought, and may find stillness in the storm, peace in the pause, and divinity in the discipline.
