Lord Kaal Bhairava attains this form when an enraged Shiva wished to teach Lord Brahma a lesson. It so happened that the male Hindu trinity – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh got into an argument with Shiva – who was the supreme most of all? Lord Shiva said he was and therefore, Lord Vishnu backed off. Lord Brahma refused to quiet down and it got a point when sages have to interfere but Lord Brahma was not destined to back off. Enraged Lord Shiva then took the form of Kalabhairav, who, in his fiercely avatar, looked like a fearsome black dog, charged at Brahma and cutoff his 5th head.
Therefore, Kaal Bhiarava keeps one ego into check. As he cut off Brahma’s head with his nail, the skull got stuck known as Brahma kapala. This depiction can be seen in all Bhairav temples in India. He is kind and easily gets happy with his devotees.
The auspicious time to worship Kaal Bhairav is the Rahu Kaal on Sundays between 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM. We have to offer coconut, sindoor, flowers, mustard oil and black sesame.
Each and every Shakti peeth is guarded by Lord Kaal Bhairava. It is also said that Lord Kaal Bhairava power lies in the occult sciences and therefore for practicing occult sciences, Bhairava is the most preferred deity.
