As the year draws to a close, let’s highlight one of the most spiritually potent days in the Hindu lunar calendar, which is Pautrada Ekadashi, also called Putrada Ekadashi. This is not just any Ekadashi, it is the one that falls towards the end of the lunar cycle and is considered as a powerful opportunity for cleansing, karmic resolution, and invoking blessings for the lineage. This Ekadashi is extremely significant for devotees seeking divine grace for progeny, family harmony, and emotional healing. The Ekadashi will be on 30th December 2025.
Mr. Prashant Kapoor, an expert and the world’s first medical astrologer, delves into why Pautrada Ekadashi is meaningful, how it functions as a year-end spiritual reset, and the rituals you should consider performing.
What is Pautrada Ekadashi (Putrada Ekadashi)?
- Observing this Ekadashi is like pressing the reset button, where one cleanses, purifies, and prepares the soul for a fresh beginning.
- This day provides a wrap-up for the karmic lessons, grief, debts (both spiritual and emotional) that one may have accumulated.
- For parents, it is a time to pray for the well-being, protection, and spiritual upliftment of their children.
- It’s also a day where ancestral karmas, often linked with Rahu-Ketu, can be addressed through sincere prayer and ritual
Legends and Spiritual Significance of the Fast
- In Puranic stories, Lord Vishnu is central to Ekadashi observances, and on Putrada Ekadashi, special prayers are offered to Him in hopes of receiving His grace for children and lineage.
- The name “Putrada” emphasizes the belief that children are not only a blessing but also a way to continue family dharma, ancestral rites, and spiritual legacy.
- Observing this Ekadashi with devotion is said to bring longevity, purity, and spiritual stability to one’s family.
Step-by-Step Rituals for Pautrada Ekadashi
Benefits of Observing the Fast for Progeny and Lineage:
- Wake up during Brahma Muhurat (early morning).
- Take a ritual bath, ideally with Ganga water or clean water mixed with some panchamrit (milk, water, honey, curd, ghee) if possible.
- Sit before your altar or temple space.
- Make a heartfelt sankalp: “On this Pautrada Ekadashi, I fast and pray to Lord Vishnu for purity, healing, and divine protection of our lineage and children.”
- Use a clean cloth (yellow or white) on the altar.
- Place an image or murti of Vishnu, or a Shaligram / Vishnu yantra if you have one.
- Offer Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, incense, a lamp (deep), and a simple fruit-based / sattvic naivedya (offering).
- You may also prepare panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, etc.) if that is your tradition.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu) — one of the most powerful practices on this day.
- Alternatively / additionally, chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” with devotion.
- Do a Nirjala (no food, no water) fast. Consume Satvik meal (once, pure vegetarian without grains)
- Maintain a calm, devotional mindset; avoid anger, unnecessary talking, or strenuous activities.
- Give alms: feed children, brahmins / priests, the poor, birds, or cows — acts of charity magnify the spiritual merit.
- Read the Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha. The stories from the Puranas reinforce the spiritual potency and reward of this observance.
- After breaking fast, spend some time in meditation or gratitude prayer.
- Visualize the blessings you wish for your family — especially your children, lineage, and emotional well-being.
