Sciatica is a symptom and it consists of severe leg pain, which sometimes might look like cramp but it is a symptom. Sometimes shooting pain makes a person impossible to stand properly or sitting nearly impossible. The sciatica pain might get worse when we sit, sneeze or cough. It can occur suddenly or it can also develop gradually. Sciatica mostly occurs in people who are in the profession that require long hour of standing. It brings weakness, numbness and burning or tingling sensation down the leg. Less common symptoms might include an inability to bend knee properly or move foot and toes properly.
Sciatica is mostly seen as a symptom of a “ pinched nerve “, that can affect one or more of the lower spinal nerves. The nerve might be pinched inside or outside the spinal canal as it run down the leg.
A slipped disc that causes pressure on a nerve root, this is one of the most common cause of sciatica. Piriformis syndrome – This syndrome develops in the piriformis muscle, it is a small muscle that is present in the buttocks and it becomes tight or spasm, that put pressure and irritates the sciatic nerve. Spinal stenosis – This is a medical condition that results in the narrowing of the spinal canal with a pressure on the nerves. Spondylolisthesis – This is a slip disc caused in one vertebra so that it becomes out of line with the one above, and it narrows, the opening through which the nerves exists.
Chronic and lasting pain is a complication of untreated sciatica. If the “pinched nerve” if seriously injured, then chromic muscle weakness, such as “drop foot”, might occur.
Some sources of sciatica are impossible to prevent, such as degenerative disc disease, back strain due to pregnancy and accidental falls.
