Iolite/Neelie is a transparent gem quality of the family cordierite. Iolite is a form of magnesium iron and cyclosilicate. Iron is always present in this mineral. Cordierite was discovered in the year 1813 and was named after the French Geologist Louis Cordier (1777-1861). Iolite/Neeli typically occurs in contact or regional metamorphism of argillaceous rock. Iolite has blue or blue-violet variety of this mineral family. The word “Iolite” has been discovered from the Greek word “ios” meaning “violet”. Sometimes this stone can appear sapphire like blue and sometimes as clear as water. The most desirable color of this stone is intense violet blue. From the top most, Iolite can appear golden yellow or honey color. It can sometimes be mistaken with tanzanite or sapphire, but it is softer than sapphire, and harder than tanzanite.

Iolite deposits are found throughout the world, but it is mostly mined from India. Some other sources include Australia, Mexico, Burma, Sri Lanka, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Iolite Treatment
There is no specific treatment of Iolite is available for color enhancement, although synthetic cordierite is available for ceramics and other industrial purpose.

Iolite cut and shape
Iolite is cut to enhance color and shape. Fine gem appears transparent and translucent in appearance. Some stone have visible inclusions, especially in larger stones. The most common shape in which this gem is found is oval, pear and round shape. Fancy cut stones are used in jewelry making – rings, pendants, necklace and bracelets. It is also used in cuffs and hair pins.
