Elephantiasis Treatment In Medical Astrology
What is Elephantiasis (Sheelapada) in Ayurveda
Talk to an astrologer online for free. According to Ayurveda, Sheelapada is called elephantiasis. In Sanskrit, ‘Shlee’ means Elephant and ‘Pada’ is termed as foot. It is a disease condition where the foot appears like the foot of an elephant. Hence, it is rationally correlated with diseases like elephantiasis, paralleling the ‘Sheelapada’ disorder. Ayurveda, an ancient science, emphasizes a disciplined, healthy lifestyle to prevent and manage disease.
Meaning and Ayurvedic Interpretation of Sheelapada
As per Ayurveda, Sheelpada is not just a swelling of the foot; it is a disorder related to doshic imbalance. The condition is caused by deep imbalances in lymph nodes and its circulation, waste elimination, and tissue framework. Ayurveda treats the root cause and not the symptoms, because that would provide long-lasting relief. These develop gradually due to dietary imbalances, improper daily routines, and a lack of a good lifestyle. The body’s natural ability to regulate fluids diminishes over time due to constant neglect of the body. That is why it is very important to detect it early and get it treated.
Causes of Elephantiasis as per Ayurveda
Role of Heavy Food and Stagnant Water Consumption
Some of the main causes of elephantiasis include:
- Kapha predominant food and habits (Kaphaja Ahara Vihara)
- Heavy food intake (Guru Ahara)
- Consumption of older/stagnant water (Puranodaka)
- Cold water intake (Sheetala Jala Pana)
- Residing in areas with stagnant water (Puranodaka Bhuyishta Desha)
Importance of Lifestyle Discipline in Prevention
Dosha Accumulation in the Inguinal Region
These factors aggravate all three doshas, predominantly the Kapha Dosha. The doshas accumulate in the inguinal region of the body and gradually move downward to the feet. Due to the lodging of doshas in the feet and legs, stony swelling occurs, resembling an elephant's foot. The condition can also affect the nose, eyes, genitalia, and lips. Weak digestion is also one of the reasons identified by Ayurveda for Sheelpada. Poor digestion would lead to the formation of toxic waste in the body, which blocks the channels and aggravates Kapha. Eventually, the Kapha will aggravate further due to improper fluid circulation. Other factors like lethargy, lack of physical exercise, stress, and improper diet also worsen Kapha in the body. Environmental conditions also play a vital role. In humid and dry climates, the body is more vulnerable to filarial infections due to poor sanitation. This poor sanitation aggravates the dominance of Kapha and exposes the body to more parasitic infections.
Elephantiasis is a type of filariasis.
Types of Sheelapada / Elephantiasis
1. Vataja Sleelapada
Symptoms and Characteristics of Vata Dominance
- The swelling is black, dry, associated with severe pain, scaly eruptions, and fever without a specific reason.
"Vatajam krishna ruksham cha sphuritam tivra vedanam. Animittarujam tasya bahusho jvara eva cha." Healing is slow in Vataja Sheelpada. The symptoms occurrence is very irregular. The pain sometimes aggravates during the night or during cold weather. The symptoms may include numbness, cracking of skin, or tingling sensations. And because of delayed healing, the patient is highly sensitive to cold and movement.
2. Pittaja Shleepad
Inflammatory Signs in Pittaja Elephantiasis
- The swelling is yellow, burning, with acute fever, and is soft to the touch. There is huge inflammation in Pittaja Sheelpada. The skin colour changes. The patients experience excessive thirst, sweating, and irritability. This condition needs to be managed quickly before it aggravates and turns into a chronic issue. There may be instances of skin discoloration and ulcer formation. "Pittajam peeta sankasham daaha jvaram ut mṛdu."
3. Kaphaja Shleepad
Chronic and Stable Swelling in Kapha Disorders
- The affected foot appears unctuous, pale or white, heavy, and stable.
"Shlaishmikam snigdha varnam cha shvetam pandu guru sthiram." This is the most commonly found case of elephantiasis. The swelling is painless and persistent. The condition is slow, however, it is very deeply entrenched to the skin of the patient. The symptoms that a patient will experience is reduced mobility, heaviness, and sluggishness. This is a very difficult type to treat because of the depth of the disease. A detailed disciplinary approach is required to treat it at the root level.

Medical Astrology and Filariasis
Planetary Influences on Immunity and Chronic Diseases
Medical astrology plays a significant role in diagnosing and treating filariasis. It helps identify planetary influences that weaken the immune system, making the body susceptible to infections. Unfavorable planetary positions may contribute to disease development.
Identifying Astrological Causes of Filariasis
As per medical astrology, afflictions of the Moon, Jupiter, or 6 th house can lead to chronic infections. These also impact the immunity, lead to an imbalance in the body fluids, and increase inflammation in the body. A weak Jupiter showcases poor
recovery and low immunity. Saturn can lead to chronic diseases and a slow healing process. Rahu and Ketu are also responsible for these chronic diseases that hardly get treated by conventional medicines. Therefore, medical astrology is a boon to help people understand the planetary imbalances and, accordingly, provide remedies.
Astrological Remedies Alongside Ayurveda
Astro consulting services, Astrological analysis allows medical astrologers to figure out the timing of the disease onset, chronicity, and response to treatments, so that effective remedies can be recommended. Remedies can range from gemstones, yantras, mantras, dietary changes, etc. Donations can also be recommended in a few cases. These remedies are done in conjunction with Ayurveda treatments that provide long-term relief. These treatments are more effective when the
planetary imbalances are restored.
