What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a symptom and consists of severe leg pain, which sometimes might resemble cramps. Shooting pain can make it nearly impossible to stand or sit properly. The pain may worsen when sitting, sneezing, or coughing. It can occur suddenly or develop gradually, especially in people whose profession requires long hours of standing. Sciatica brings weakness, numbness, and a burning or tingling sensation down the leg. In less common cases, it may cause an inability to bend the knee properly or move the foot and toes correctly.
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica is mostly seen as a symptom of a “pinched nerve,” which can affect one or more of the lower spinal nerves. The nerve might be pinched inside or outside the spinal canal as it runs down the leg.
Conditions That Cause Sciatica
- Slipped Disc: A slipped disc that puts pressure on a nerve root is one of the most common causes of sciatica.
- Piriformis Syndrome: This develops in the piriformis muscle, a small muscle in the buttocks, which can become tight or spasm, putting pressure on and irritating the sciatic nerve.
- Spinal Stenosis: This medical condition results in the narrowing of the spinal canal, putting pressure on the nerves.
- Spondylolisthesis: A slipped disc in which one vertebra moves out of line with the one above, narrowing the opening through which the nerves exit.
Complications Associated with Sciatica
If left untreated, sciatica can lead to chronic and lasting pain. If the “pinched nerve” is seriously injured, it may cause chronic muscle weakness, such as
drop foot (difficulty lifting the front part of the foot).
Can Sciatica Be Prevented?
Some causes of sciatica cannot be prevented, such as:
- Degenerative disc disease
- Back strain due to pregnancy
- Accidental falls
Ayurveda and Sciatica

Medical Astrology and Sciatica
Ayurveda and medical astrology are closely related. If medical conditions are sound yet a person still suffers from sciatica, planetary positions in the horoscope may be responsible. A professional medical astrologer can analyze the horoscope to identify planetary imbalances that may be causing sciatica and provide remedies.
