Significance of Amarnath
Having found its existence amid the beautiful Himalayas, Amarnath is the most holy shrine. It is believed that at this place Lord Shiva preached about immortality to Goddess Parvati. The main attraction of this holy site is the natural Shivling made of ice in the cave, which is famously known by the name Baba Barfani.
The shape of Shivling is constantly changing like the size of the moon. Complete shape can be witnessed on Shravan Purnima whereas it gradually gets smarter by Amavasya.
Every year thousands of devotees visit to worship lord Shiva in its Shivling form.
Story of Famous Pigeons at Amarnath
The story of Pigeons is famous in mythology. Devotees often witness a pair of pigeon moving around the holy shrine even on this day. This sight came as surprise because it is nearly impossible for the birds to survive in this bitter cold weather.
According to mythology, when Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva about his secret of immortality and Lord Shiva decided to tell the secret by narrating Amarnath Katha in detail. He wanted an abandoned or a deserted place to narrate the story and found Amarnath cave perfect place since he wanted none to lend ear to this secret.
In hurry he left his Nandi Bull, released the moon, released garland of snake, left behind the 5 elements of Panjtarni and his son Lord Ganesha.
He assured that the place is completely deserted by creating Samadhi and Kalagni. When he was reciting the secret of immortality, a pair of pigeon overheard the story and thus became immortal.
